Tibetan Govt-in-Exile Urges China to Embrace Compassion, Seek Peaceful Resolution to Tibet Issue

Dharamsala, Dec 10 (IANS): The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) on Wednesday expressed hope that China would abandon what it described as “destructive policies” in Tibet and move towards a peaceful resolution of the Sino-Tibetan conflict through the mutually beneficial Middle-Way Approach.

The appeal came as the Tibetan government-in-exile marked the 36th anniversary of the Dalai Lama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. In a statement, the CTA said it hoped the Chinese government would “encounter the companionship of compassion, kindness and wisdom” and end efforts aimed at eroding Tibetan identity and damaging Tibet’s environment.

December 10 also coincides with International Human Rights Day, which the CTA observes globally as the “Year of Compassion” in honour of the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday. CTA President Penpa Tsering extended greetings to supporters worldwide, noting that the Dalai Lama’s philosophy of peace and universal responsibility offers guidance at a time marked by global conflict and fear.

The CTA reaffirmed its commitment to the Dalai Lama’s teachings and prayed for his long life. It also reiterated the Tibetan struggle’s aim of securing genuine autonomy within China. The Tibetan exile community, including the Dalai Lama, has been based in Dharamsala since 1959, following the suppression of the Tibetan uprising and the forced exile of over 80,000 Tibetans.
