New Delhi: Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu has called for consistent support for athletes, regardless of victory or defeat, during a panel discussion at the FICCI Turf 2025 Global Sports Summit. Sharing the stage with Beijing 2008 bronze medallist Vijender Singh, she highlighted the mindset, structure and backing required to shape India’s next generation of Olympic champions.
Reflecting on her contrasting experiences after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and her injury at the Asian Games, Mirabai said, “When I returned with a silver medal, thousands welcomed me. But after my injury, when I couldn’t win a medal, there was no one at the airport. Support should not disappear in defeat. Athletes perform better when they feel valued, irrespective of results.” She stressed the need to prioritise young talent by ensuring they receive complete support and proper platforms to grow.
Vijender Singh underscored the importance of a strong mental approach, saying athletes must enter high-pressure competitions believing they can win. “The mindset is the most important. We must think of ourselves as the best and perform like it,” he said.
Charu Sharma, Director of Pro Kabaddi League, highlighted the crucial role of family encouragement, praising Mirabai’s mother for supporting her sporting ambitions. The panel collectively emphasised consistent public backing, youth investment, family support and a stronger sports ecosystem as essential for nurturing India’s future Olympic heroes.
