Dhaka, Nov 20 (IANS): Bangladesh veteran Mushfiqur Rahim has etched his name in cricketing history by scoring a century in his 100th Test match, becoming the first Bangladeshi to reach the milestone and one of only a handful of players worldwide to mark it with a hundred. His composed 106 off 214 deliveries helped Bangladesh seize control of the second Test against Ireland in Dhaka.
With this achievement, Rahim joins an exclusive club that includes Colin Cowdrey, Javed Miandad, Gordon Greenidge, and Graeme Smith—cricketers who also scored centuries in their 100th Test. He becomes the 11th player to do so, with Ricky Ponting remaining the only one to score a hundred in both innings of his milestone Test in 2006. Joe Root and David Warner were the most recent additions before Rahim.
Bangladesh ended Day 1 on 292/4 with Rahim unbeaten on 99, before he completed his 13th Test ton early on Day 2. His effort, supported by Litton Das’ impressive 128 and Mominul Haque’s fifty, guided Bangladesh to a strong first-innings total of 476. Rahim and Litton’s 108-run partnership for the fifth wicket was instrumental in keeping Ireland on the back foot.
For Ireland, Andy McBrine shone with figures of 6/109, while Matthews Humphreys and Gavin Hoey picked up two wickets each. Bangladesh entered the contest with a 1–0 lead after their dominant victory in the opening Test in Sylhet.
