New Delhi: India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, and the newly commissioned stealth frigate INS Udaygiri are showcasing the nation’s naval strength at the International Fleet Review (IFR) 2025 in Colombo, marking their maiden overseas deployment. Hosted by the Sri Lanka Navy from November 27–29 as part of its 75th anniversary celebrations, the event features naval participation from multiple countries.
A Navy official said that INS Vikrant’s first appearance at an international naval platform underscores India’s commitment to deeper maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The ship’s presence highlights India’s emphasis on peace, security and enhanced interoperability with partner navies. The inclusion of INS Udaygiri further reinforces India’s growing indigenous shipbuilding capabilities and its expanding, balanced naval posture in the region.
During their stay in Colombo, the Indian naval ships will join the ceremonial fleet review, city parade, community outreach programmes and high-level professional interactions. Both vessels will also be open for public visits as part of IFR 2025.
The deployment comes shortly after India and Sri Lanka conducted the 11th edition of Exercise Mitra Shakti in Belagavi, which ran from November 10–23. The two nations also held Army-to-Army Staff Talks in Bodhgaya on November 21, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening defence ties and regional stability.
