Hong Kong Police Find No Remains in Search of Fire-Hit Buildings

Hong Kong authorities on Saturday confirmed that no human remains were discovered after police completed searches of two of the seven residential buildings damaged in the Wang Fuk Court fire. Addressing the media, Deputy Chief Secretary Cheuk Wing-hing said support funds for victims have reached 1.1 billion Hong Kong dollars, including 800 million from public donations and 300 million in government grants.

As of 3 p.m. local time, the devastating fire had claimed 128 lives and injured 83 people. Police also confirmed that all 144 individuals previously listed as missing were now safe. The Hong Kong Police Force said evidence collection and investigation into the Tai Po blaze are underway and expected to take three to four weeks.

Officials said the fire likely started in the lower-level perimeter nets of Wang Cheong House, where foam boards ignited and flames spread rapidly. The intense heat shattered windows, caused indoor fires, and burned bamboo scaffolding, with falling debris sparking additional blazes across the complex.

Meanwhile, the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has launched a full-scale probe into suspected corruption linked to a major renovation project at Wang Fuk Court. Eight individuals—including consulting firm directors, project managers, scaffolding subcontractors, and a middleman—were arrested on Friday. ICAC officers conducted searches at 13 locations, seizing documents and bank records. The investigation remains ongoing.
