Gill Under Observation for Neck Spasm; Participation in 1st Test Uncertain: BCCI

Kolkata, Nov 15 (IANS) India captain Shubman Gill has been placed under medical supervision after suffering a neck spasm during the second day of the ongoing first Test against South Africa. The BCCI said his availability for the remainder of the match will depend on how he responds to treatment. “Shubman Gill has a neck spasm and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team. A decision on his participation will be based on his progress,” the board stated.

The issue surfaced in the first session when, after sweeping Simon Harmer for a boundary in the 35th over, Gill immediately grabbed his neck in discomfort. Physio Kamlesh Jain rushed onto the field, and the skipper was seen holding the left side of his neck, struggling to move it freely. Soon after, he retired hurt, having faced only three balls.

Gill’s injury comes at an important phase of India’s innings, with the hosts leading but left with just three wickets in hand on a challenging surface offering inconsistent bounce and turn. Later broadcast visuals indicated that Gill had already been experiencing stiffness before play began, as he was seen attempting neck-relaxation exercises and grimacing through the motions.

This is not Gill’s first neck-related setback; a similar issue had sidelined him from the opening Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru in October 2024. His condition will continue to be assessed before a final call is taken.
