New Delhi, Nov 4 (IANS) — South Australia pacer Brendan Doggett has thrown his hat into the ring for an Ashes call-up after an outstanding return to domestic cricket, taking seven wickets against Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield. His spell included a stunning 6 for 48 in the first innings, marking a strong comeback from a hamstring injury.
“It was my first red-ball game of the season, and the timing couldn’t have been better to grab a six-for,” Doggett said on Tuesday. The 31-year-old, who previously featured in Australia’s squad for the 2018 UAE series against Pakistan and last year’s home series against India, has also been part of the World Test Championship final squad against South Africa.
Doggett played a pivotal role in South Australia’s historic Sheffield Shield title win last season — their first since 1995-96 — taking 33 wickets at 24.15, including record-breaking figures of 11 for 140 in the final.
While he hasn’t yet heard from selectors ahead of the Ashes squad announcement, Doggett remains hopeful. “We’ve got the best bowling attack in world cricket. It’s a privilege just to share the dressing room with guys like Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood,” he said, adding that he’s ready if the call comes.
