Dhaka: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Monday accused certain groups of attempting to erase the memory and significance of the 1971 Liberation War, which led to the country’s independence from Pakistan.
Speaking at a meeting at the Thakurgaon District Freedom Fighters Complex, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir cautioned that those who once sided with the Pakistani army during the war are now “trying to swallow the country.” He alleged that efforts are being made to undermine the contributions of the freedom fighters, while giving undue credit to present-day political actors.
Fakhrul recalled the sacrifices of the war, saying, “Thousands were martyred, countless displaced, and our mothers and sisters suffered unimaginable atrocities. How can we forget that?” He also warned of a conspiracy to sabotage the upcoming February 2026 national elections, urging the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government to announce the election schedule without delay.
The BNP leader further alleged that the interim administration is deliberately delaying the polls and obstructing implementation of the July National Charter. He insisted that any proposed referendum must coincide with the general election, warning that postponement “would mean destruction for the country.”
