Bangladeshi National Found on Bengal Voter List; In-Laws Mistaken as Parents in ID Card

Kolkata, (IANS) — A major irregularity surfaced on the first day of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in West Bengal after a Bangladeshi national was reportedly found listed as a voter in the state, with his in-laws mistakenly recorded as his parents on the voter ID card.

The incident was reported from Hingalganj in the Basirhat subdivision of North 24 Parganas district, creating a stir among locals. According to sources, the man, identified as Rashidul Gazi from Satkhira district in Bangladesh, is alleged to have illegally entered India in 2012 through the Basirhat border. He later moved to Tamil Nadu for work, where he met Rumesh, a woman from Hingalganj. The two eventually got married after returning to West Bengal.

Following the marriage, Rashidul’s voter ID card was allegedly issued under a new name, Abdul Gazi, listing his father-in-law and mother-in-law as his parents. His name was also found in the voters’ list of Booth No. 208 in Paschimpara, Hingalganj.

Local police have initiated an inquiry after being alerted to the irregularity. “We are looking into the matter. No formal complaint has been filed yet,” a senior Basirhat district police officer said. The issue has also been brought to the attention of the district administration.
