The Hague, Nov 14 (IANS): Hundreds of Bangladeshi expatriates from across Europe gathered outside the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague on Friday, forming a human chain to protest alleged human rights violations in Bangladesh under the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, the Awami League said.
The demonstration, organised by the Netherlands chapter of the Awami League and led by President Mostofa Zaman and General Secretary Murad Khan, also featured a virtual address by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the Chief Guest. Protesters later submitted a memorandum to the ICJ President, detailing allegations of arbitrary arrests, torture of minorities and Awami League supporters, and politically motivated cases targeting Hasina and her followers.
The complaint accused Yunus and his associates of unlawfully seizing power and collaborating with extremist groups to destabilise the country — including alleged attacks on state institutions, the burning of Bangabandhu’s historic residence at Dhanmondi 32, and bans imposed on the Awami League and its student wing, the Chhatra League. Leaders from several European Awami League units joined the rally, demanding international intervention.
Awami League leaders condemned what they described as widespread repression under the interim regime and urged party members to remain alert amid the upcoming “Dhaka Lockdown” programme. They claimed that violence and intimidation were occurring nationwide with the tacit support of the Yunus administration ahead of a key tribunal verdict involving Hasina expected on November 17.
