LoP Adhikari Flags ‘Politicisation’ of Police Event in Letter to CEC, Seeks Urgent Action

West Bengal Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has written to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that a recent state police event was misused for political purposes by the ruling Trinamool Congress. In his letter submitted on Tuesday, Adhikari urged the Election Commission to intervene, claiming that the neutrality of the state police is now in question ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.

Adhikari said the “Second State Conference of Women Police Personnel,” organised by the West Bengal Police Welfare Committee on November 22 in Digha, was effectively converted into a political platform. According to him, serving police officers, cabinet members, TMC legislators and party leaders actively participated in the programme, which he claimed violated established norms of impartiality.

The LoP further alleged that senior officers used the event to openly endorse Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He referred to remarks by inspector Bijitaswa Routh, who reportedly launched personal attacks against him and declared that the “fight will continue till May 2026” to reinstate Mamata Banerjee for a fourth term. He also cited comments by DCP Shantanu Sinha Biswas, who allegedly described the Chief Minister as the “future leader of India” and urged police personnel to repay their “debt” during elections.

Concluding his letter, Adhikari requested a detailed probe into the activities and political links of the Police Welfare Committee, alleging partisan conduct, involvement in election malpractice, and interference in voter facilitation processes.
