Patna, Nov 21 (IANS): India and Sri Lanka have identified fresh avenues to strengthen military cooperation during the 11th Army-to-Army Staff Talks (AAST) held in Bodhgaya, Bihar, from November 18 to 20. The discussions, led by Major General Ravi Pathiravithana of the Sri Lankan Army, focused on enhancing interoperability, expanding defence engagement and reaffirming the shared commitment to regional peace and stability.
The talks coincided with the ongoing 11th edition of Exercise ‘Mitra Shakti’ in Belagavi, Karnataka, where both armies are conducting intensive joint drills. The exercise, underway from November 10 to 23, involves 170 Indian Army personnel from the Rajput Regiment and 135 Sri Lankan troops from the Gajaba Regiment, along with participants from both air forces. The training includes drone deployment, counter-UAS operations, helipad security, casualty evacuation and coordinated counter-terror missions.
According to the Indian Army, the exercise showcases seamless coordination across urban and semi-urban terrains, highlighting shared operational proficiency and deepening defence ties. Joint drills such as raids, search-and-destroy missions and heliborne operations aim to enhance tactical synergy under Chapter VII of the UN mandate for sub-conventional operations.
The two armies are also exchanging best practices across various combat skills, further reinforcing long-term defence cooperation. The exercise and staff talks together underscore the growing strategic partnership between India and Sri Lanka, strengthening regional security and fostering stronger bilateral relations.
