Turkiye to Host COP31 as Australia Withdraws Bid, Takes Over Negotiation Presidency

New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS): Turkiye has been confirmed as the host nation for next year’s UN Climate Change Conference, COP31, after Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the withdrawal of Australia’s hosting bid. Despite stepping aside, Australia will preside over the negotiations, with Climate and Energy Minister Chris Bowen set to serve as COP31 President for negotiations.

The decision comes after weeks of uncertainty during COP30 in Belem, Brazil, where delays prompted concerns that the 2026 summit might revert to Bonn. As negotiation president, Australia will lead the agenda-setting process, appoint Chairs, and prepare draft decision texts. A pre-COP meeting will be held in the Pacific, providing an opportunity for global leaders to pledge support to the Pacific Resilience Fund.

Experts noted that the host country matters less than the climate outcomes achieved. Environmental advocates are urging Australia to use its leadership role to accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels and strengthen adaptation finance. Meanwhile, climate scholars highlighted that Türkiye’s close ties with major fossil fuel producers such as Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan will require careful scrutiny to ensure impartial negotiations, although Turkish civil society is expected to bring robust activism to the summit.

Australian leaders reacted with mixed views, with some expressing disappointment while others emphasised the need for stronger domestic commitment to climate goals. COP30, being held in Belem from November 10 to 21, continues to push for shared global action toward limiting warming to 1.5°C and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
