Indian Oil Begins First Production from Gujarat’s Jyoti-1 Well, Marks Key Boost to India’s Upstream Energy Drive

New Delhi, Nov 17 (IANS) Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has achieved a major milestone in India’s upstream energy sector with the start of domestic production from the Jyoti-1 well in Gujarat. Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced the development on social media, describing it as a “small but significant” advancement in strengthening the nation’s energy security.

According to Puri, production began on November 14, 2025, at the IUVL site in Block CB-ONN-2005/9. He said the revival of upstream operations signals a renewed strategic push by IOC, aligning with the government’s mission to enhance energy independence and maximise domestic resource utilisation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The minister credited the achievement to coordinated efforts by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH), and IOC, and congratulated all teams involved for advancing the country’s upstream capabilities.

The development comes on a day when India also took another major step toward diversifying its energy sources. Puri announced that Indian public-sector oil companies have signed a landmark one-year agreement to import LPG from the United States for the first time. The deal is expected to secure about 2.2 million tonnes of LPG for the 2026 contract year, bolstering supply for one of the world’s fastest-growing LPG markets.
