Bihar Polls: High Stakes for Nitish Kumar, Tejashwi Yadav and Emerging Leaders Ahead of Counting Day

New Delhi: As Bihar awaits the results of its Assembly elections on November 14, political fortunes across party lines hang in the balance. While exit polls predict another victory for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the outcome carries significant implications for both seasoned and emerging leaders in the state.

For Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, this election is a test of legacy. Though not contesting himself, the Janata Dal (United) chief is keen for his party to emerge at least as the second-largest force in the Assembly. In 2020, JD(U) slipped to the third position with 43 seats, behind ally BJP (74) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) (75). A repeat of that result could raise questions about Nitish’s political longevity at 74, even as he remains a central figure in Bihar’s governance.

Meanwhile, RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, 36, faces pressure to consolidate his leadership after being projected as the Mahagathbandhan’s chief ministerial face. A close result will strengthen his standing, but a poor showing could invite dissent within the alliance, especially from Congress and the Left parties.

Also watching keenly are Prashant Kishor of Jan Suraaj, and Chirag Paswan of LJP (Ram Vilas) — both hoping to expand their footprints. For the young leaders of Bihar, Friday’s verdict will decide whether they can emerge as the next generation of political power in the state.
