India reiterates steadfast support to Sri Lanka after Cyclone Ditwah; Misri hands over life-saving medicines

New Delhi, Dec 12 (IANS) Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Friday met Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to India, Mahishini Colonne, reaffirming New Delhi’s unwavering support for the island nation’s recovery and reconstruction efforts following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

During the meeting, Misri handed over essential life-saving medicines that will be transported to Colombo aboard an Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft as part of India’s ongoing humanitarian mission, Operation Sagar Bandhu. The Ministry of External Affairs said India remains firmly committed to assisting Sri Lanka in its time of need.

Launched on November 28, Operation Sagar Bandhu has been delivering critical search and rescue assistance, medical care, and disaster-relief support to areas ravaged by severe flooding, landslides and infrastructure damage. On Thursday, Sri Lanka’s Deputy Health Minister Muditha Hansaka Wijemuni and Health Secretary Anil Jasinghe visited the Indian Army’s field hospital in Mahiyanganaya and praised the timely medical aid being provided.

India’s support has extended beyond healthcare. Earlier this week, the Shatrujeet Brigade Integrated Task Force restored a cyclone-damaged optical fibre cable in Mahiyanganaya, bringing an end to a major communications blackout. The swift repair once again underscored India’s role as a first responder in the region, committed to strengthening essential services during crises.
