India Calls for Equitable Climate Action, Urges Developed Nations to Step Up at CoP30 in Brazil

New Delhi: India reaffirmed its commitment to equitable climate action and sustainable development at the CoP30 Leaders’ Summit in Belem, Brazil, emphasising the need for fairness and shared responsibility in global climate efforts.

Indian Ambassador to Brazil, Dinesh Bhatia, representing the country at the summit, highlighted India’s achievements in emission reduction and renewable energy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He noted that India reduced its GDP’s emission intensity by 36 per cent between 2005 and 2020 and achieved over 50 per cent non-fossil fuel power capacity—meeting its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) target five years early.

Bhatia underscored India’s progress in expanding forest cover, creating an additional carbon sink of 2.29 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, and emerging as the world’s third-largest producer of renewable energy with nearly 200 GW of installed capacity.

India urged developed countries to accelerate emission cuts and deliver on promises of predictable finance and technology transfer. Stressing that affordable finance and capacity building are vital for developing nations, Bhatia reiterated that global climate action must remain guided by the principles of equity and Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities (CBDR-RC).
