BNP Alleges Yunus-Led Interim Govt May Manipulate 2026 Polls to Favour Jamaat, NCP

Dhaka, (IANS) — The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has voiced deep concern that the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government may use “unlawful means” to ensure electoral victories for the two political groups it relies on — the radical Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party (NCP) — in the February 2026 general elections, according to local media reports.

Speaking at a party event in Dhaka, senior BNP leader Mirza Abbas accused the interim government of acting under the influence of the two parties. “This government has no strength of its own. It survives by leaning on two groups — one that it created and another with an old history,” Abbas said, citing the allocation of NCP’s election symbol as evidence of political bias.

He questioned the legitimacy of these parties, asking, “Who are they? What is their popular base? Do they have any real support in Bangladesh?” Abbas warned that the interim regime might resort to illegal tactics to secure their victories.

The BNP leader also criticised Jamaat for trying to divide the nation along religious lines, accusing the government of ignoring unemployment and corruption. “A new class is emerging, interested only in looting and destroying the country,” he said, lamenting Bangladesh’s deepening political turmoil ahead of the polls.
