New Delhi, Dec 2 (IANS): Over 1,825 MW of rooftop solar capacity has been installed across 91,574 government buildings belonging to various Central ministries, departments, and state/UT administrations as of November 4, the Centre informed Parliament on Tuesday.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) said it has urged all states and Union Territories to direct their departments and institutions to utilise vacant rooftops for solar panel installations. Central ministries and departments have also been asked to ensure that all government-owned buildings are equipped with rooftop solar systems. This initiative forms a key part of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, aimed at accelerating rooftop solar adoption in the public sector.
Minister of State for Power, Shripad Yesso Naik, told the Rajya Sabha that no Central Financial Assistance (CFA) is provided for government buildings, as rooftop solar installations are already economically viable for them. For households, however, CFA of ₹30,000 per kWp for the first 2 kWp and ₹18,000 per kWp for the next 1 kWp is available, with a cap at 3 kWp.
Higher subsidies apply to special category states and UTs, though the government currently has no proposal to increase CFA. The minister highlighted that initiatives like PM-KUSUM, PM-JANMAN, and One Sun, One World, One Grid continue to drive India’s push toward clean and equitable energy.
